We know that human beings are animals but what does it mean when we say we have an animal within us? Far from being simply a colloquial expression, some popular views in favor of animal rights adopt this belief. I examine the assumption implicit in this sort of language — that “the animal” should be understood in an abstract sense — and try to show it does a disservice to actual nonhuman animals. In my view, there is no animal within us — there are just different kinds of animals besides us.
