All human beings benefit from the legal status of person, as opposed to being considered mere things that can be appropriated. All have fundamental rights which protect them from torture, killing and enslavement. However, members of the species Homo sapiens are not the only ones endowed with the interests that these rights aim to protect: non-human sentient beings also have an interest in not suffering, life and freedom. Since justice demands that similar interests be treated in the same way, it follows that the most fundamental individual rights as well as the legal personality must be granted to all these animals, and their exploitation should be abolished.
